If you were at a party and someone exclaimed, “Man, I hate math!  I have never been able to do it!  I can’t even help my six year old sister with her math!” more than one person would yell, “hey, me too!” and everyone would have a big laugh, giving high-fives, sharing stories of their math failures.

But if you were at that same party and someone exclaimed, “Man, I hate to read!  I can’t even help my six year old brother with his reading!” the record would skip and everyone would, rightfully, look at you funny.

So what is it about being “bad at math” that is OK?  Recently, Gwyneth Paltrow told the world that she is “terrible at math” on the Regis and Kelly Show.  Everyone had a big laugh at Gwyneth’s inability to do her six year old’s homework.  Somehow this is considered charming.  Is it?

Three days after receiving my final grade in my final course of graduate school, and suffering from anxiety in all forms for my entire life, I read in The Huffington Post’s education section the article Testing Anxiety: Researchers Find Solution to help Students Cope.
