Why Inner-City kids don’t shoot up schools January 18, 2011

I’m no proponent of guns; in my little world, they don’t exist.  But having worked in public schools for a while, I’ve gotten to know some gun carrying kids and frankly, they’ve been some of my favorite.  Sure, I shouldn’t have favorites, but that’s hardly the issue.  Kids bringing weapons to school isn’t even the issue.  Kids don’t bring weapons to school to hurt kids or teachers at school.  When was the last time there was an inner-city school shooting done on purpose?  Kids in the city carry weapons to defend themselves against the filth they encounter on their way to and from the bus stop on their way to and from school.  The real issue here is just how difficult it is for some kids to make school an easy part of their day, not that a gun or a knife slips through the metal detectors once in a while.  You can read the full article “Gardena High School Shooting: 2 People Shot” on Huffington Post.
